Gannett Fleming is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer/Scientist to join our growing environmental team in the Ontario market.

The Senior Environmental Engineer/Scientist will play a key role in our Toronto environmental services team.

The individual will manage and supervise the execution of environmental site assessments (Phase 1/2 ESAs), excess soil management investigations, environmental due diligence studies, contaminated site investigations and remediation projects for transit, transportation, municipal and infrastructure planning projects.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for business development initiatives, including spearheading environmental pursuits, supporting multi-disciplinary opportunities with environmental components and building relationships with industry personnel.

 

Our Toronto office is located in the heart of downtown Toronto, with easy and connected access to transit, such as the TTC and GO Train service. We have a flexible hybrid work policy.

 

Duties and Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, manage, and supervise the execution of Phase 1 and 2 ESAs in accordance with Ontario Regulation 153/04, as amended or in accordance with Canadian Standard Association (CSA) Standards.
  • Plan, manage and supervise excess soil management-related work in accordance with Ontario Regulation 406/19 and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Rules for Soil Management and Excess Soil Quality Standards.
  • Provide senior technical review and guidance for other types of contaminated site investigations, such as due diligence and delineation studies, remediation, and environmental risk assessment support.
  • Support and guide junior and intermediate staff in completing field investigations and providing prompt remedies for challenges encountered during fieldwork.
  • Perform project management and coordination duties to deliver exceptional deliverables on time and within budget.
  • Provide senior technical leadership and mentorship and work collaboratively with other staff, including junior and intermediate team members.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory agencies, authorities having jurisdiction, and other consultants as required.
  • Prepare environmental contract specifications/Project Specific Output Specifications (PSOS) to support P3 projects.
  • Lead business development pursuits, including identifying new clients/pursuits, capture planning, proposal preparation, reviewing sub-consultant proposals, and collaborating with other disciplines as part of pursuits.
  • Apply the best available science and engineering practices as part of executing work.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a relevant discipline, such as environmental engineering, hydrogeology, geology, geoscience, or environmental science.
  • Meet qualifications as a Qualified Person in Ontario (i.e., P.Eng. or P.Geo.) based on education, training and professional experience.
  • 10 years of experience in the field of environmental science or engineering in Ontario.
  • Proficiency and experience in applying and ensuring compliance with relevant procedures and environmental regulatory requirements associated with Ontario Regulation 153/04 and Ontario Regulation 406/19.
  • Adept knowledge and expertise with applicable Canadian Standards Association (CSA) principles, practices and requirements, including CAN/CSA-Z768-01 (R2022), CAN/CSA-Z769-00 (R2023), etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in carrying out Phase 1 and Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessments, including designing and executing field work programs to support environmental soil, groundwater contamination, due diligence studies.
  • Proficiency in preparing excess soil planning documentation such as Assessment of Past Uses, Sampling and Analysis Plan, Soil Characterization Report and Excess Soil Destination Assessment Report.
  • Aptitude for project management with excellent attention to detail and ability to manage project budgets, staffing resources and timelines.
  • Proven experience in leading and supporting environmental pursuits in Ontario.
  • Ability to read and interpret design and construction drawings and support technical reports for major and complex undertakings and projects.
  • The successful candidate must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to collaborate within a team environment.
  • Strong data evaluation and reporting capabilities, as well as strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • · Occasionally willing to travel to project sites to meet clients or support junior and intermediate staff with complex field projects.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Valid Driver’s license.
