Our Geotechnical/Dams & Hydraulics Group is looking for an experienced Senior Project Geologist to join our California team, either in our Roseville, Oakland, Los Angeles, Irvine, or San Diego office.

 

As a Senior Project Geologist, you will primarily support hydroelectric and transportation clients and their related projects by planning, designing, organizing, and performing geologic investigations to characterize and evaluate geologic/geotechnical conditions and identifying geologic factors that could impact the design, construction, and/or long-term performance of engineered structures.

 

Project work performed includes geological and geotechnical investigations, rockfall evaluation and mitigation, wildfire and storm damage assessment and repair, geologic hazard evaluation including fault and seismic source characterization, geotechnical and structural instrumentation, and inspections of linear assets (roadways, rail lines, canals, tunnels, penstocks, etc.). You will apply a broad technical knowledge of principles and practices. This role involves working on and managing multiple small- to medium-sized projects and/or moderate-sized tasks within larger projects.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes geologic data, including geologic maps, aerial photos, LiDAR/photogrammetry, construction records, and other background document information;
  • Performs geologic field reconnaissance and mapping to document site conditions, identify geologic hazards, and assess overall site characteristics;
  • Develops and implements complex investigation plans, job hazard assessments, and project-specific safety plans, and manages investigation programs using various direct and indirect subsurface and surface methods;
  • Performs and manages logging of borings, rock coring, test pits, and fault trenches;
  • Applies state-of-practice methods, interprets and correlates available data, prepares cross-sections and geologic maps, develops conceptual geologic models, recognizes and resolves discrepancies in results using a systematic process;
  • Prepares comprehensive feasibility-level or design-level technical reports;
  • Develops geologic and seismic source characterization in collaboration with in-house seismic hazard analysis program.
  • Performs construction observation activities including foundation preparation, instrumentation installation and data acquisition, rockfall mitigation measure installation, slope grading/stabilization, etc.;
  • Prepares maintains and tracks project budgets, schedules, and reports needed to achieve project goals;
  • Manages concurrent multiple small-medium projects or significant tasks within larger projects; management includes tracking of project resources, scope, budgets, schedules, and deliverables in accordance with established quality management program;
  • Assist with managing existing clients, developing new clients, and identifying new business opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • BA/BS degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Geological Engineering;
  • 10 – 15 years of professional experience of increasing responsibility in engineering geology or related type projects;
  • Current Professional Geologist (PG) license in California;
  • Experience in developing, conducting, and managing engineering geology projects/tasks independently or as part of a larger team;
  • Experience in performing independent geologic research and preparing reports, tables, and figures with a focus on detail and accuracy;
  • Ability to thrive on a diverse, close-knit, and dynamic geology team and willingness to mentor and learn from experienced professionals;
  • Strong, professional-level oral and written communication skills;
  • Proficient use of standard office software programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • MS degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Geological Engineering;
  • Current Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG) registration in California;
  • Experience primarily related to water conveyance/storage, hydropower, and infrastructure projects regulated by FERC, DSOD, and other agencies;
  • Qualified as a Responsible Onsite Person as defined by FERC for significant and high hazard dams;
  • Proficiency in using various professional software tools, such as Rocscience suite, LiDAR/photogrammetry/modeling software packages including Agisoft Metashape, Maptek Point Studio, and LeapFrog Geo/Works;
  • SPRAT rope access technician certification; and
  • Strong client management skills.
