With minimal supervision, designs and prepares cost estimates to meet the needs for a variety of projects in all phases of construction. Estimates the necessary effort to prepare estimates mandated for each project. Accurately determines the complete scope of work for each project. Prepares detailed takeoffs for all scopes of work. Gathers critical estimating inputs from designers, suppliers, and trade contractors. Leads estimating teams by clearly conveying individual responsibilities, helps members meet those responsibilities and integrates members’ output into the estimate.

 

This position can reside anywhere in the country as primarily will work from home.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Meets with clients to determine their needs, objectives, timelines and to gather estimating inputs.
  • Prepares a level of effort for each project for acceptance by the project manager.
  • Works with clients to develop deliverables that fit within the client’s estimating budget.
  • Develops customized estimating strategies for each project.
  • Creates detailed and comprehensive scopes of work.
  • Assembles estimating teams, assigns individual responsibilities, and manages the process.
  • Identifies key designer, supplier, and trade contractor resources to ensure accurate scopes and pricing.
  • Uses costing databases and historical data to price estimates.
  • Reviews, discusses, and adjusts team members’ pricing.
  • Assesses areas of financial risk, develops preventative measures and their attendant costs.
  • Assures that proper costing databases are utilized.
  • Checks all pricing for adequacy and appropriate modifications.
  • Has takeoffs and pricing reviewed by a Senior Estimator.
  • Employs escalation strategies to ensure accuracy of escalated historical pricing and current pricing escalated to future years.
  • Prepares general conditions costs based on anticipated schedule, phasing, and specific project needs.
  • Prepares indirect costs appropriate for the type of project, procurement, and prime contractor.
  • Acts as a mentor to junior estimators.

EDUCATION AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

  • BS degree, preferably in engineering, construction management or architecture or an AACE International CCP or CEP accredited certificate are preferable.

TRAINING, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND/OR EXPERIENCE 

  • At least fifteen (15) years estimating experience; experience to be specifically in a construction environment.
  • Proficient in the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience with dedicated estimating software.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

 

ADDITIONAL NOTES

Other duties may be assigned as necessary. Must be able to independently travel and be physically present in the office or at a client site. Works in a dedicated office environment. Infrequent day trips may be required; overnight trips are rare.
