GFT’s Environmental Team is looking for a Senior Environmental Planner to join our established and growing Environmental Team. This position will integrate into a team of environmental scientists, planners, and project managers to deliver a wide range of Environmental Assessment projects within various sectors, including transportation infrastructure (road/bridge), transit/rail, water/wastewater, power, etc.  This role offers the opportunity to work in a truly multi-disciplinary environment, giving access to a broad knowledge base with the support of experts across the business.

GFT’s Environmental team delivers integrated planning, permitting, and compliance solutions that support infrastructure development across North America and Toronto. With more than 140 professionals in 22 offices, the team guides clients through NEPA and permitting processes, ecological and regulatory assessments, and environmental remediation efforts. Their expertise spans transportation, power, water, and facilities markets — working alongside agencies at federal, state, and local levels. From stream restoration to complex environmental impact statements, GFT helps clients protect resources, manage risk, and meet regulatory requirements with confidence.

 

In the capacity, you will be responsible for the following:
  • Assist with leading and delivering a variety of EA projects including Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Class EAs, Municipal Engineers Association Class EAs, Transit and Rail Project Assessments, etc. from planning to approval phases.
  • Coordinate closely with the engineering design team to ensure technical and environmental workstreams are closely aligned as part of the EA process.
  • Author Environmental Assessment Reports (ESDs, DCRs, TESRs, Project File Reports, Environmental Study Reports, Environmental Project Reports, etc.) and other supporting environmental documentation to satisfy regulatory requirements.
  • Be able to interpret relevant legislation including Ontario Environmental Assessment Act, Impact Assessment Act, Ontario Regulation 231/08, etc.
  • Direct and manage a project team of environmental and technical disciplines (including subconsultants) as part of the EA process.
  • Prepare public/stakeholder consultation plans and engagement strategies for EA projects.
  • Carry out public, review agency, Indigenous Communities consultation including public meetings, technical meetings, preparation of communication materials, consultation reports, stakeholder responses and comment tracking.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies and assist in preparing consultation strategies and meeting materials accordingly.
  • Prepare environmental impact assessments including undertaking assessment of potential effects, development of mitigation/monitoring strategies, net effects analysis, and best management practice approaches.
  • Monitor EA project schedule, scope and budget in accordance with the project management plan.
  • Assist in preparing documentation to support permits and approvals.
  • Coordinate environmental aspects of projects through planning, design, contract specifications, and/or construction.
  • Support business development pursuits, including proposal preparation, development of technical workplans and preparation of project fee estimates.

What you will bring to our firm: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management, Planning, Engineering, Urban Planning or a related discipline. A graduate degree in the above areas is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years of practical experience managing and delivering Environmental Assessments in Ontario.
What we prefer you bring: 
  • Must have established working knowledge of relevant legislation including Ontario Environmental Assessment Act, Ontario Regulation 231/08, Impact Assessment Act, Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, etc.
  • Experience delivering TRPAPs, MTO Class EAs and/or Municipal Class EAs.
  • An understanding of transportation, transit and municipal infrastructure construction projects gained through practical experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and drawings.
  • Experience in carrying out evaluation of alternatives, undertaking impact assessments, and authoring EA reports/documentation.
  • Proven experience in carrying out public, agency, and Indigenous consultation, with the ability to assess project and client needs.
  • Must have working knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements related to noise, cultural heritage, archaeology, natural heritage, air quality, land use, species at risk, etc.
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of various environmental permits and approvals.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency with a strong commitment to ensuring client satisfaction, achieving goals and objectives.
  • Excellent self-management, time management and organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and multi-task.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, team oriented and ability to work independently.
  • Professional designation such as Registered Professional Planner (RPP), Professional Engineer (P.Eng), and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat applications, and file sharing systems (e.g., SharePoint).

Compensation:  

The salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
