GFT is seeking a Municipal Designer/Engineer-in-Training, Drainage to join our Transportation Group. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our Toronto, Ontario fice.

What you'll be challenged to do:

 

GFT, is looking for a Municipal Designer/Engineer-in-Training – Drainage. With a strong civil background to support planning, design, and construction management activities for a variety of projects, the candidate will be an important member of our drainage & stormwater management team in the Greater Toronto Area. As a drainage and stormwater management designer you will be responsible for the involvement of several tasks/contracts with local clients including MTO, Metrolinx and municipal clients.

 

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following: 

  • Support planning, detailed design, and construction services for drainage and stormwater management (SWM) systems.
  • Develop designs for: Storm sewers, culverts, and watermains; Stormwater management ponds and low impact development (LID) features; Hydrologic/hydraulic modeling for flood analysis and conveyance systems
  • Conduct analysis and prepare technical reports, design briefs, and permit applications for municipal, conservation authority, and provincial approvals.
  • Prepare design drawings, grading plans, and construction documents using Civil 3D, MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and support field inspection services during construction.

What you will bring to our firm:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental/Water Resources Engineering (Master’s an asset).
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status in Ontario, actively working toward P.Eng. licensure.
  • 2–5 years of direct experience in drainage and stormwater management design, with exposure to municipal infrastructure or transportation projects.

What we prefer you bring:

 

Experience with:

  • Hydrologic/hydraulic modeling tools such as SWMHYMO, Visual OTTHYMO, HEC-RAS, EPA-SWMM, or InfoWorks ICM
  • Stormwater BMPs and LID design
  • Wet utilities (storm, sanitary, watermains)

As well as: 

  • Knowledge of MTO Drainage Design Standards and Metrolinx requirements.
  • Practical experience with construction inspection or field drainage assessments.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS or Bentley OpenRoads/related modeling platforms.
  • Experience contributing to proposals and cost estimates for drainage/SWM assignments.
  • Familiarity with Ontario regulatory environment and approvals (MECP, TRCA, CVC, and municipal processes).
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and experience preparing regulatory submissions.
