What you’ll be challenged to do:
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Civil Designer / Assistant Project Manager to support and lead various civil engineering projects across multiple sectors. This role will encompass both hands-on design and project leadership responsibilities. The ideal candidate is someone who is not only technically skilled but also thrives in a team-oriented, client-focused environment with a passion for delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
As part of our multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to a diverse portfolio of projects, including:
Site development
Utility infrastructure
Rail engineering
Stormwater management
Roadway and trail design
You will play a key role in the development and delivery of technical designs, oversee junior staff, and support project managers in delivering on scope, schedule, and budget. This is a hybrid role, offering the flexibility of remote work with in-office collaboration as needed.
In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
Lead or support design tasks and documentation for civil engineering projects using MicroStation, GeoPak/OpenRoads, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Prepare conceptual layouts, construction documents, specifications, and technical reports.
Organize, delegate, and manage project tasks among internal team members and subconsultants to ensure timely and accurate deliverables.
Supervise and mentor junior staff; review their work for quality and compliance with engineering standards.
Conduct and participate in field visits, investigations, and construction inspections as needed.
Assist with developing project scopes of work, manpower estimates, design budgets, schedules, and project execution plans.
Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including in-house architects, environmental planners, and engineering staff, as well as external clients and stakeholders.
Coordinate with permitting agencies and utility providers to ensure project compliance.
Review designs for conformance with company and client standards, industry best practices, and applicable codes.
Support business development efforts and maintain a “seller-doer” mindset, including client interaction, proposal support, and project pursuit strategies.
Minimum 3 years of professional civil engineering design experience in a consulting or public agency environment.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited university.
Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation, with strong technical understanding of site grading, drainage design, and utility layouts.
Familiarity with GeoPak, OpenRoads, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Demonstrated leadership in fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment.
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Prior NCDOT project experience or familiarity with state transportation standards and procedures.
Experience with site development design, permitting, and construction administration.
Previous project management experience or formal project leadership training.
Located in or willing to relocate to the local region.
Ability to travel within the state for project meetings, site visits, and inspections.

Salary Range:$80,000 - $95,000
