GFT is seeking a Rail Construction Inspector to join our Practice or CBG Team in Oak Brook or Chicago, IL! This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring regular attendance at our Oak Brook or Chicago offices.

What you’ll be challenged to do:
Inspects and oversees construction work to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications by performing the following duties. Performs quality control inspection activities.

 

This position involves frequent travel. Candidates must be willing and able to travel up to 60% of the time, depending on project needs. Travel will include overnight stays and occasional weekends.

 

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following: 

  • Measures distances to verify accuracy of dimensions and layouts.
  • Verifies levels, alignment, and elevation of installations.
  • Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures followed and materials used conform to specifications.
  • Prepares samples of unapproved materials for laboratory testing.
  • Examines workmanship of finished installations for conformity to standard and approves installation.
  • Interprets blueprints and specifications for Contractor and discusses deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.
  • Records quantities of materials received or used during specified periods.
  • Maintains daily log of construction and inspection activities and compares progress reports.
  • Capable of handling small to medium projects of moderate complexity.
  • Has capability to monitor several types of work activity, however not simultaneously.
  • Maintain construction safety practices and work methods for compliance.
  • Begins to work independently, but requires supervision.

What you will bring to our firm: 
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Requires a minimum of 8 years of inspection experience with some technical training or equivalent experience.
  • Rail construction experience. 
  • Must have knowledge of Word Processing software and Internet software.

  • Each inspector must possess at minimum a valid Class “C” driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • This position involves frequent travel. Candidates must be willing and able to travel up to 60% of the time, depending on project needs. Travel will include overnight stays and occasional weekends.
What we prefer you bring: 
  • Associates Degree in related field preferred.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities - May oversee the work of less experienced inspectors.

  • Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software and Internet software.
  • Certificates and Licenses – IDOT certification preferred, ACI Field and/or Strength, Troxler or similar state DOT certification are recommended, but not required.

 

Compensation:
The hourly range for this role is $35.00 - $50.00. Pay is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
