GFT is seeking a GIS Field Technician to join our geospatial team at our Richmond, VA office. The role will follow an onsite work format reporting directly to our office and client project sites.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

As a GIS Field Technician, you will support GIS field projects focused on accurate data capture, validation, and quality management. This role requires a detail-oriented, self-motivated individual comfortable working outdoors for extended periods.

 

In this capacity, you will be responsible for:

  • Collecting and capturing spatial field data using GIS and mobile data collection tools.
  • Performing feature edits, updates, and adjustments to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
  • Conducting quality control and validation of GIS datasets.
  • Supporting overall data quality management and documentation.
  • Participating in status meetings and coordinating with project team members as required.
  • Traveling to field locations and performing fieldwork at project sites.
  • Working outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions.

What you will bring to our firm:

  • Associate’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in a GIS or field-based data collection role, including hands-on experience with spatial data capture and editing.
  • Working knowledge of Esri GIS solutions, including ArcGIS (ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro), ArcGIS Online, and mobile data collection tools such as Collector or Field Maps.
  • Experience with data quality control, field verification, or asset data collection.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced field environment.
  • Ability to travel for field assignments.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to perform field work, work outdoors, lift 30 pounds, and navigate rough terrain.

What we prefer you bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Prior experience supporting infrastructure, utility, or asset management GIS projects.
  • Familiarity with field-based workflows, GPS-enabled data collection, and spatial data standards.
  • Experience collaborating with project managers, analysts, or engineering teams.

 

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $55,000 - $75,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
