GFT is seeking a Junior Environmental Planner to join our Environmental Team in Toronto, Ottawa, London or St. Catharines!

 

A Junior Environmental Planner supports projects by drafting technical report content, coordinating consultation / engagement programs, identifying environmental constraints, assessing impacts, and coordinating technical specialists.

 

Key Responsibilities and Role Details

 

  • Environmental Assessment & Reporting: Assisting with the preparation of technical environmental reports, assessments, and studies.
  • Consultation & Engagement: Coordinating and preparing materials for public, stakeholder and Indigenous community engagement programs, including organizing public information centres (virtual or in-person) and other stakeholder meetings. Responsible for tracking consultation activities, documenting commitments, and proactively following up on action items and next steps.
  • Project Technical Support: Identifying environmental features, constraints, alternatives, and mitigation measures.
  • Quality Assurance: Preparing work in compliance with GFT’s company quality standards, procedures, and documentation requirements.
  • Team Collaboration: Working with senior planners, environmental scientists, and engineers to support project delivery.

Candidates will be involved in developing and executing engagement and consultation programs, coordinating environmental specialists, as well as identifying and assessing environmental features, constraints, alternatives, potential effects, mitigation measures, and avoidance opportunities.  Another key aspect of the role will be drafting technical content for environmental reports and documentation.  The candidate will assist with identifying environmental features/constraints, understand basic concepts related to applicable legislation and guidelines, and policies, as well as document the project process. We are seeking highly motivated and accountable candidates who work collaboratively with other team members and are effective communicators. Organizational skills and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities.

As part of our team, the successful applicant will assist in environmental management work and deliverables throughout a project life cycle, including:

 

  • Working with and supporting Senior Environmental Planners and Project Managers in executing municipal, provincial, and Federal environmental assessments/impact assessments (planning, preliminary design, detail design, alternative delivery projects) as well as other approval and permitting activities for infrastructure projects.
  • Developing and implementing consultation programs, including public, municipal, regulatory agency, and Indigenous Community engagement.
  • Liaising with clients by phone, email, writing, and in person.
  • Liaising with local, provincial, and Federal agencies regarding permits and approvals.
  • Collaborating with technical and professional staff across the company in completing assignments.
  • Coordinating, preparing for, attending, and documenting project meetings.
  • Coordinating environmental specialists (i.e., fisheries, terrestrial, noise, air, archaeology, etc.).
  • Being familiar with the Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection Act, and other relevant legislation.
  • Researching, conceptualizing, planning, and writing drafts of reports related to planning, design, and permitting.
  • Participating in study administration through budgeting.
  • Supporting business development efforts, including proposal writing and participation in industry associations.
  • Participating and contributing to GFT’s Technical Practice Groups.

What you will bring to our firm: 

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, or related field.
  • 2+ years experience in an environmental planning or similar role, preferably with a consulting firm.
  • Demonstrated experience and skillset in technical writing and compiling technical and environmental reports/documents.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Aptitude for problem-solving and ability to work well with people.

What we prefer you bring: 

 

  • Experience with, or knowledge of the Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process, Ontario EA Act, Municipal Class EAs (including current regulatory updates and modernization initiatives), and other legislation related to the position (e.g., Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Navigation Protection Act, Environmental Protection Act, and their regulations).
  • Full or Provisional membership in a professional body (e.g., Registered Professional Planner (RPP and MCIP); Canadian Environmental Professional (EP); or Project Management Professional (PMP)).
  • Class G driver’s license.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $34.00- $42.00 an hour. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
