GFT is seeking an Engineer in Training I–III – Highway Construction (Staff Engineer, Construction Services) to join our Construction Services team in Laredo, TX. This is a full-time, onsite opportunity supporting TxDOT transportation projects, ensuring quality, safety, compliance, documentation, and performance in the field.

What you’ll be challenged to do: 

As an Engineer in Training I–III, you will support highway construction projects consisting of construction, widening, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of transportation infrastructure including roadways, bridges, drainage systems, traffic signals, utilities, phased urban construction, and traffic control operations. 

This position is ideal for an emerging engineering professional seeking hands-on TxDOT construction experience while actively progressing toward professional engineering licensure. You will assist Resident Engineers, Project Managers, field engineers, inspectors, and technical staff with construction oversight, documentation, quantity verification, engineering analysis, and field issue resolution. 

In this capacity, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist with Quality Assurance oversight and technical support on TxDOT highway construction projects.
  • Apply engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related construction activities.
  • Collect engineering data at project sites, including field measurements, quantities, production information, and construction progress.
  • Assist with inspection activities, field documentation, and recordkeeping support as project demands require.
  • Prepare, review, and verify Daily Work Reports, quantity calculations, materials documentation, and SiteManager/APCM entries.
  • Assist in reviewing contractor pay estimate quantities and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with review of construction plans, specifications, standards, estimates, and contract documents.
  • Review construction plans prepared by consultants and contractors for constructability, coordination, and field implementation.
  • Assist with Requests for Information, submittals, shop drawings, change order documentation, and supplemental agreement support.
  • Support traffic control implementation, work zone safety reviews, SW3P oversight, and compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Track project progress and assist with preparation of periodic progress reports, meeting notes, and construction updates.
  • Actively prepare for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training, exams, documentation, and continuing education. 

Additional duties for Engineer in Training II & III include:

  • Perform more advanced engineering-related field, construction, documentation, andanalysiswork. 
  • Assist with specialized reviews involving construction sequencing, traffic control, drainage, structures, utilities, materials, and schedule impacts.
  • Support resolution of field issues, plan discrepancies, quantity disputes, and construction coordination items.
  • Assist with preparation and review of change orders, time impact information, and construction documentation packages.
  • Assist in training less experienced engineering staff, inspection staff, and technicians.
  • Support the Resident Engineer and Project Manager with contract administration, issue resolution, progress tracking, and project closeout.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline accepted by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TX PELS). 

Experience: 

Minimum Qualifications for Engineer in Training I–III: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related engineering discipline accepted by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TX PELS).
  • Engineering-related experience in transportation, highway construction, bridge, drainage, utility, inspection, materials, field engineering, or construction management.
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving to project locations.
  • Ability to work in a field construction environment, including active roadway construction zones.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles, methods, and techniques to transportation-related construction activities.
  • No supervisory experience required.
  • Must be actively preparing for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training, exams, documentation, and continuing education. 

Minimum Qualifications by Level: 

Engineer in Training I:

  • Some engineering-related experiencerequired. Experience may include internships, co-ops, field inspection, construction support, transportation engineering, or related project experience.
  • Engineer in Training certification preferred. 

Engineer in Training II:

  • 1 year of engineering-related experience. Experience may be satisfiedbyfull-time or prorated part-time equivalent experience. 
  • Texas Engineer in Training Certificate required. 

Engineer in Training III:

  • 2 years of engineering-related experience. Experience may be satisfiedbyfull-time or prorated part-time equivalent experience. 
  • Texas Engineer in Training Certificate required.
  • Passing the Professional Engineer exam prior to obtaining the requisite experience for PE licensure may substitute for two years of engineering-related work experience. 

Licenses and Certifications: 

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving to project locations. 

What we prefer you bring: 

  • Experience administering TxDOT construction contracts preferred or municipal contracts 
  • Interest in heavy highway construction, TxDOT construction administration, and field engineering. 
  • Experience working on TxDOT or TxDOT-equivalent highway construction projects. 
  • Experience assisting with construction inspection, quantity verification, field documentation, or materials documentation. 
  • Familiarity with TxDOT Standard Specifications, construction plans, standards, and field documentation requirements. 
  • Familiarity with SiteManagerAASHTOWareProjectwise, or similar construction management/documentation systems. 
  • Experience with roadway, bridge, drainage, traffic control, utility, and phased urban construction. 
  • Experience reviewing shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, change orders, pay estimates, or daily work reports. 
  • Familiarity with CPM schedules, construction sequencing, and progress tracking. 
  • Familiarity with SW3P oversight and stormwater compliance requirements. 
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with contractors, inspectors, TxDOT representatives, consultants, and project stakeholders. 
  • Passed Fundamentals of Engineering exam. 

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $104,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
