Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated Communications System Designer to support our Transit & Rail Systems Division, a nationally recognized leader in railroad planning, design, project management and construction management.   This position can be based in a mulitude of areas. 

 

The Successful Candidate should have:

  • Have experience in Railroad Operations Communications Systems, both wayside and onboard, Railroad Station Communications, and Railroad Front and Back Office Systems.
  • Be well versed in Positive Train Control systems, including the interrelationship of Wayside Interface units to wayside Radio, Transport and lateral Fiber Optic sub-systems, Back Office Control Systems; their related networks and Vehicle Communications systems. A familiarity with Railroad signal systems as well as, the experience and ability to work with peers, in that discipline, would be an asset.
  • Possess a familiarity with onboard Wi-Fi Systems for passengers as subscriber and the related backhaul systems.
  • Possess a familiarity with onboard health systems, the interrelationship with vehicle sub-systems, communications systems, office systems and networks.
  • Possess the ability and experience to interface with Communications Common Carriers, including the defining of, and establishment of contract parameters such as, Service Level Agreements, bandwidth requirements and the selection of communications protocols and their related interfaces.
  • Be familiar with Passenger Information Systems, Class 2 wiring requirements, SCADA, UPS systems, CCTV and Security Systems, Ticket Vending Systems, PBX and Voice over IP telephony, fiber optic systems, IP WAN, LAN and WLAN, coaxial and over-the-air RF transport systems.
  • Possess a familiarity with RF propagation and RF propagation modeling applications and tools.
  • Have experience in the writing of reports, reviews, spread sheets, proposals, cost estimates and contract documents.

  • 5-10 Years’ experience with several of the above systems.
  • Prior Railroad or Transportation Experience.
  • Relevant Certifications
